Indiana development agency approves Regional Cities funding for South Shore

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has approved Regional Cities Initiative funding to support improvements to the South Shore commuter line and two other projects affecting the greater South Bend area.

The agency on Wednesday announced approval of $800,000 in state funding toward the $4 million cost for preliminary work to double-track the South Shore between Gary and Michigan City. The project is designed to eventually cut travel time between South Bend and Chicago to 90 minutes.

The IEDC also approved $2 million for the Marshall County Wellness and Life Enrichment Center, an aquatic center and soccer complex in Plymouth.

The agency also approved $3.5 million in state funding toward the nearly $11 million cost of improvements in one phase of South Bend's Studebaker factory redevelopment project.
