Kudos to Legislature for women’s rights support

“From a teenage lover, to an unwed mother, kept undercover, like some bad dream. While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered, they run like water, through a mountain stream.“

These lyrics from Tammy Wynette’s song, “Unwed Fathers,” on the 1983 album, “Even the Strong Get Lonely,” embody a repeated refrain — women remain the caregivers for their children regardless of how the child was conceived or the fetus’ viability.

Last week, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Reproductive Health Act and sent a clear message to the rest of the country: We won’t go back. Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, knows this most personal of decisions must not be legislated, but rather decided between a woman and her health provider.

I'm grateful to Rep. Villa and other members of the General Assembly for their support of the Reproductive Health Act.

Gov. Pritzker has promised to sign the bill. We must hold him to this promise.

The country is in a manufactured, man-made state of emergency, which seemingly ignores the constitutional freedom and rights of women to manage their own lives.

Thank you, Illinois, for trusting women.

Unemployment rates are at some of the lowest in history. Still, many businesses are looking for candidates to possess degrees along with business and professional certificates, many of the very items we offer at the College of DuPage.

Businesses are also looking for leaders, not just those who manage or lead an organization, but some of the most needed leaders are individual contributors, leading by example, taking on challenges, stepping up to work on a tough project. If you can be one of those individual leaders, you will stand out and you will have advancement opportunities.

It is up to you to use your skills and credentials to create even more opportunities. Do so with the confidence that you built through your hard work. Know that because you have reached this point, even greater experiences are waiting for you just around the corner.
