Commencement was held Sunday for the graduating seniors of Glenbrook South High School, serving as a next-chapter start for the class of 2019 and the superintendent who is retiring at the end of the school year.
The ceremony was held at Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont.
The ceremony marked the last Glenbrook South graduation for Supt. Michael Riggle as he retires from the district after more than 20 years.
It also included speeches from student body president Kate Gregory and senior class president Adam Alwan.
Some 728 students make up the class of 2019, school district officials said.
Principal Lauren Fagel focused her speech “on the concept of openness,” and she encouraged the students ot keep an open mind and open heart.
“As you meet new people and learn new information, try to come to each situation with a willingness to see things through other people’s eyes. While our view of the world is integral to who we are, that view can evolve by being open minded about new ideas, new cultures, new ways of doing things,” according to the text of her speech.
Fagel also thanked the graduates for sharing “your best selves” during their time at Glenbrook South High School.
“I am proud of your academic, athletic, and extracurricular achievements. But more important than that, I am proud of the young adults you have become,” according to the speech text. “Remember, you are in the driver’s seat now. You determine your future through your thoughts, words and actions.”
