State grant will help fund infrastructure projects near Glencoe schools

The village of Glencoe and Glencoe District 35 will receive more than $100,000 in state grant funds for infrastructure projects near the village’s three schools, according to a news release.

The grant money comes from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to Schools program, according to IDOT. Nearly $119,000 will go toward infrastructure needs such as new sidewalks, repairing existing sidewalks and intersection enhancements, including new or improved signs on Dundee Road and Forestway Drive around West School.

In addition, there will be crosswalk improvements and enhancements to the pavement on South Avenue near South School, the statement read.

“I’m exceptionally pleased to announce this grant award, as it is another indication of the collaborative partnership that has existed between the Village and District 35 for many years now,” said Village Manager Philip Kiraly in a statement. “These improvements are the next step toward ensuring a higher level of safety for children in our community traveling to and from school.”

A separate $7,500 grant will be used for educational programming that promotes safe biking and walking events such as the annual International Bike to School Day, the Bike Safety Rodeo and corresponding workshops.

“I’m grateful to our teachers and community members for their efforts to educate our students about safe walking and biking habits,” Glencoe District 35 Superintendent Catherine Wang added in the statement. “The partnership between District 35 and the Village will advance our shared values of safety and connectivity.”
