Speak Out: Dist. 230 teacher raises, technology

A Speak Out commenter gave a view on technology. This Sept. 12, 2018, file photo shows an Apple iPhone XR on display at the Steve Jobs Theater after an event to announce new products, in Cupertino, Calif.

Technology has improved our lives in some ways but made some of us lazy. People can talk and text on the phone for hours but can't have a civil conversation with the person they are sitting across the table from. People seem to worry more about how they are portrayed on Facebook than how their friends and family perceive them. People rely on Apps to do things instead of doing them themselves. People give up their privacy so that they can have a robotic device think for them. . . . Sad.

Consolidated High School School District 230 teachers are probably pleased with their recently approved 5-year contract with average yearly raises of 3.35%. . . School officials seem to defend the contract by saying that some costs will be absorbed by retirements. What they don't mention is that beyond that, the costs of those raises will be absorbed by taxpayers.

As if distracted and drunk drivers aren't bad enough, some Illinois drivers may have to deal with marijuana smokers. . . I wonder if added gas tax and vehicle sticker costs are Gov. J.B. Pritzker's way of stopping people from leaving Illinois in droves like they for years now. Money for infrastructure? Tolls collected on roads were supposed to be just until the roads are paid for. How many years ago was that? And then the lottery came along. Wasn't that money supposed to go toward education? . . . What will be the next?
