Speak Out: South Suburban Airport, state funds

A Speak Out commenter gives a view on the proposed South Suburban Airport. A sign at Bult Field near Monee is shown March 19, 2019. The state acquired the airstrip for $34 million in 2014, part of nearly $100 million spent since 2002 for the proposed airport.

Has an updated study been done on the proposed South Suburban Airport? With apparent climate change, we seem to be experiencing more weather-related problems, like flooding and tornados. Would this impact the planned airport? With the flooding we have been experiencing, is it wise to cement over more land and loose valuable farm land? How would this large cemented area impact surrounding areas? With future delivery drones and self-driving trucks, would the airport even be viable in the future? Avoid a possible boondoggle and return the land for farm use.

Ted Slowik's column in the Daily Southtown on Friday reads like a piece on where does your town rank? It is a mandatory read if you would like to know if your community is one of the winners or losers in receiving state funds. It gives readers a reason to ponder on what might have influenced those distributions. Well done, Mr. Slowik.

Our deficit is going through the roof with this so-called conservative president in office. Once again we are looking at a bailout for the farmers whose livelihood depends on selling soybeans and other produce to China. President Donald Trump accused China of trying to renege on concessions at the last minute but this has been his strategy all along. He seems to be looking to bully his way to a better deal. After more pain and suffering coming from the stock market and more headaches for the farmers, if there is a deal, it will be no more favorable than the one he could have gotten in the first place. The end result — we the consumers are the biggest losers.
