Speak Out: Preakness Stakes, property taxes

A Speak Out commenter gives a view about Bodexpress in the Preakness Stakes. Bodexpress runs in the 144th Preakness Stakes horse race without John Velazquez at Pimlico race course, May 18, 2019, in Baltimore. War of Will, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione won.

I have been around horses all my life and owned three of them. At the Preakness Stakes, a jockey fell and the horse kept running. What if Bodexpress bypassed all the other horses and won as a riderless horse? That would’ve set a precedent. That’s why I won’t gamble. If they’d let horses run without jockeys there’d be a different turnout. Thank goodness the horse didn’t get hurt. The horse could have been trampled to death. . . It should be a lesson that you have to be careful.

George in Burbank suggested that a person’s attitude should be part of the driving examination. Just how do you fairly judge attitude? It is subjective.

I read in Speak Out about a 70-year-old person with a modest, three-bedroom home. His property tax bill went up another $500 and he didn’t know what to do. There are many of us like that. Let’s have all the people who have had their property tax bills raised form a large committee and go to House Speaker Michael Madigan, who specializes in real estate taxation, and have our taxes reduced. That should solve the problem for many people. . .
