Speak Out: Chicago schools, property taxes

A Speak Out commenter gives a view on Chicago Public Schools. Students( l-r) Jori Akins and Hannah Mangan prepare corn pudding for farm-to-table meal for 300 residents at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences in Chicago's Mt. Greenwood neighborhood on Nov. 22, 2016.

With new Mayor Lori Lightfoot, hopefully we can do more with our shuttered public schools. We have schools for the arts and technology but we need more down to Earth courses, like commerce, home economics and ones that teach people to become master craftsmen. The Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences has a store where they sell their vegetables run by the students. Set up a school with a small store that could be like a Meijer or Kmart stores. Students could learn store design, purchasing, accounting, bookkeeping, and food preparations. They also could learn clothing design to create uniforms or other items to sell at a store. We can be creative and fill a void.

A repeal of the current flat tax rate to a graduated rate based on income will eventually mean taxes for those who work very hard to get the best for their families. They only tell you the good stuff so you will vote it. Just look the new proposed cost of license plates, fuel tax, liquor tax, new toll road fees on roads that are currently used with no tolls and cigarette taxes again. Illinois is dead broke so any new taxes that can be passed are welcomed.

I live in Will County and we all got our property tax bills in the mail. People were probably surprised by how much the taxes have been going up. Mine went up almost $700 and most of it goes to school districts. Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 built Lincoln-Way North High School in Frankfort that we didn’t even need. It now sits idle. It was a monumental waste of money. . .
