Here are the the 2019 Cubs draft picks.
We’ll be updating throughout the process, all the way to Round 40 on Wednesday. Check back for updates.
Day 1
No. 27 (first round): Ryan Jensen, RHP, Fresno State
The Cubs threw a curve with their first pick in the MLB amateur draft Monday night by selecting Fresno State pitcher Ryan Jensen.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Jensen, a junior, was ranked as the 109th prospect by Baseball America. But Jensen’s fastball was clocked as high as 98 mph, and he has struck out 107 in 100 innings this season, including eight in 7 2/3 innings Friday night against UC Santa Barbara in an NCAA regional at Stanford.
“We knew going into that selection it was going to be a surprise, at least to the draft experts,” said Jason McLeod, the Cubs executive vice president of player development/scouting. “Our staff saw this guy going wire-to-wire this year.”
Jensen, a native of Salinas, Calif., finished 12-1 with a 2.88 ERA. He limited opponents to a .288 batting average this season.
No. 64 (second round): Chase Strumpf, 2B, UCLA
Strumpf, 5-11 and 197 pounds, hit a three-run home run against Loyola Marymount in an NCAA regional final moments after he was picked.
Strumpf is batting .285 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs and a .422 on-base percentage.
Day 2
No. 103 (third round): Michael McAvene, RHP, Louisville
The 6-3, 210-pound right-hander has a 2.67 ERA and 0.83 ERA with seven saves for the Cardinals this season.
Louisville plays host to East Carolina in a super regional this weekend, but McAvene will not be available to pitch until the finale of the best-of-three series — should it go to three games. He was ejected in a regional game against Indiana and suspended four games.
No. 133 (fourth round): Chris Clarke, RHP, USC
In 27 appearances for the Trojans this year, the 6-7, 212-pound junior posted a 1.03 ERA over 52 1/3 innings pitched. He had eight saves, in his first year as a reliever.
No. 162 (fifth round): Josh Burgmann, RHP, Washington
The 6-foot, 205-pound sophomore out of Nanaimo, British Columbia, started 14 games for Washington this season, finishing 4-6 with a 3.99 ERA. He had 101 strikeouts and walked 22.
No. 192 (sixth round): Ethan Hearn, C, Mobile Christian High School (Ala.)
Ranked the 66th prospect by Baseball America, Hearn (6-foot and 200 pounds) has committed to Mississippi State. He bats left and throws right.
He is considered by some to be the best high school catcher in the 2019 draft class.
No. 222 (seventh round): Brad Deppermann, RHP, University of North Florida
In 15 starts for UNF this season, Deppermann was 6-5, with a 2.46 ERA. He struck out 108 and walked 24.
No. 252 (eighth round): Davidjohn Herz, LHP, Terry Sanford High School (N.C.)
Herz, who is 6-2 and 185, has committed to North Carolina. According to Perfectgame.org: “Fastball topped out at 91 mph with lots of arm side life in addition to the angle. Sweeping slider that tunnels well with his fastball, can move the ball around the zone and work up and down in addition to side to side.”
No. 282 (ninth round): Tyler Schlaffer, RHP, Homewood-Flossmoor High School
“He attacks the strike zone with confidence,” his high school coach, John McCarthy, said of the 6-1 senior. “When he goes out there and throws like he’s capable in the first inning, it sets the tone for the rest of the game. He has dominant stuff. He’s a power pitcher.”
Schlaffer, ranked No. 21 in Illinois, is committed to UIC.
No. 312 (ninth round): Wyatt Hendrie, C, Antelope Valley Junior College (Calif.)
Hendrie batted .410 this season with two homers and 26 RBIs.
