A newborn girl just two or three hours old was found in a field near residential and commercial buildings in Chicago Heights on Tuesday, according to police, who are seeking to find the infant's mother.
Police received a 911 call at about 11 a.m. Tuesday from a person claiming to have discovered an "unattended newborn lying in the grass in an open field."
Officers located the baby girl about 100 feet west of 19460 Chicago Heights-Glenwood Road. Paramedics were called and took the infant to Franciscan Health hospital in Chicago Heights, where she was listed in good condition.
Chicago Heights Police Chief Thomas Rogers said detectives were trying to find the baby's family. "There's a safe-haven law and a lot of new mothers don't know about this," Rogers said.

Under the law, a newborn up to 30 days old can be dropped off at a police station, fire station or hospital with no questions asked. Rogers said getting the mother medical help was his top priority.
Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of the baby's mother or any other family member can call police at 708-756-6422. Police say the mother may be in need of medical care or other support services.
